Summer bliss and getaways

It’s hot here. Summer is in full swing; the air con is on, the days are long and dry, and dusk is pushing 9pm. To make the most of the summer heat, we’ve left Sydney and ventured up the coast. There’s something about removing yourself from the everyday that makes the precious days between Christmas and New Years feel even more like a holiday. Even if it’s only to the in-laws an hour away. Despite the best of intensions, I often find nothing days in Mosman become cleaning days, or days of life admin commitments that see us spend little time actually doing nothing. As a result holidays instead become a collection of weekends, rather than a break of sunburn, breakfasts, and reading on the beach till the sun goes down. Today we set off to the beach with an umbrella under arm and fresh pineapple and mint juice in hand. We walked the splendour that is Soldier’s Beach looking for the perfect spot to park weary 2016 selves. We baked, relaxed and reclined in the sunshine, only to recover in the …

Getting my green thumb on; organic gardening on our tiny balcony

Last weekend I stood like a weirdo hopelessly in the corner of Bonds nursery. I was trying to listen to a podcast on organic gardening (out loud) inconspicuously as I’d left my shopping list at home. As the nursery is a good 30 minutes from my house, I was determined not to make a second trip to the shops. As I stared confusingly at the range of organic potting mixes, fertilisers and plant foods, trying madly to remember what it was I had written down, I scribbled pointers from the podcast on to a flower catalogue. I questioned how much my little organic seedlings really needed that blood and bone mix, or if I really wanted a chicken poop stench haunting my small back balcony. Organic gardening is something that most holistic health coaches swear you should do. I’ve been told there is a profound joy that comes from nurturing little seedlings into fresh, tasty fruit and veg. And as I’m a big fan of anything that’s meant to be good for the soul, I’m …

Blog Crush: Kate Caddle (aka The Whole Housewife)

I’m incredibly excited to share with you today’s blog crush. When I first started my health and wellness journey almost a year ago, I stumbled across Kate’s blog ‘The Whole Housewife’ (which recently re-branded to Kate Caddle) through Instagram. Once I found her blog, I went on to read almost every post she had shared since starting her journey online. I found her approach to wellness and holistic living intoxicating, and today I owe much of my own health and positive attitude to her. Whenever I feel like my journey needs a jolt to get back on track, I find myself back on Kate’s blog and Instagram taking inspiration from her approach to life. So it’s a total thrill to share with you the awesomeness that this chick puts out into the world. I hope you enjoy! Tell me about The Whole Housewife – Why did you start your journey and where is it going? I started my journey as The Whole Housewife in January 2014 after a quest to find wellness naturally. I’d been …

Searching for that holiday feeling (without the holiday…)

Are you questioning how on earth we’re already in February? Are you feeling a little like the passing of years flew by in the blink of an eye and that out of nowhere we’re already talking Easter? How and when did this happen?!? Yet somehow when I look around me there seems to be people everywhere flaunting a post holiday glow and refreshed attitude to life. If you’re feeling a little dazed about what happened to your precious summer break, you’re not alone. My holiday was mostly a blur of Christmas shopping, family visits, trips to see friends and a whole-lot-a life admin. Despite that I had nearly two weeks away from my desk (only a mere month ago!), the time didn’t leave me feeling ready and roaring to take on a new year. In fact, when I returned to work I was feeling rather flat and weary which was not how I had intended or desired to start 2015. Seeing a longing in my eyes (and after having felt the same holidaylessness as me), …

My earthy slice of heaven: Coles Bay, Tasmania

I forgot how beautiful silence is. What it’s like to sit and listen to absolutely nothing. It wasn’t until I left the city on Friday that I noticed the constant hum that follows you everywhere in Sydney. True silence is incredibly tranquil and sweetly deafening. To celebrate the Australia Day long weekend Aaron and I left the ‘mainland’ and ventured south to Tasmania. We heard about Tassie’s elusive fresh produce, crystal beaches and crisp air, and wanted to see if the rumors were true. Our destination was Coles Bay: a small town on the cusp of the Freycinet National Park on the eastern coast of the island state. Surrounded by wineries, spectacular scenery and seriously good food, it’s famous for it’s access to Wineglass Bay – one of the top ten beaches in the world. Our trip started on Friday afternoon with a flight to Hobart. While our first night was a bit of fun (nothing outrageous to report) the real adventure started at 7am the next day when we hit the road. Once we …
