A cool change

Sydney this summer has been somewhat of a furnace. I love hot, salty days where the beach beckons and the sun goes down late in the evening, but there’s nothing like a cool storm to save the day. Yesterday that sweet relief finally arrived. It’s no surprise to anyone who’s lived through it, but this summer has been incredibly warm; in fact the hottest on record… ever.  So when the clouds cracked and the rain finally hit the ground, you could almost hear our garden sing out in praise. I was in our sunroom with the windows wide open when that moment arrived with force. Out of nowhere, the air started to change and a sense of calm swept over Mosman Bay. A tranquility that’s been noticeably absent fell upon us as the birds, bugs and activity that heat brings abruptly relaxed into the cool shift. Summer bliss and getaways

It’s hot here. Summer is in full swing; the air con is on, the days are long and dry, and dusk is pushing 9pm. To make the most of the summer heat, we’ve left Sydney and ventured up the coast. There’s something about removing yourself from the everyday that makes the precious days between Christmas and New Years feel even more like a holiday. Even if it’s only to the in-laws an hour away. Despite the best of intensions, I often find nothing days in Mosman become cleaning days, or days of life admin commitments that see us spend little time actually doing nothing. As a result holidays instead become a collection of weekends, rather than a break of sunburn, breakfasts, and reading on the beach till the sun goes down. Today we set off to the beach with an umbrella under arm and fresh pineapple and mint juice in hand. We walked the splendour that is Soldier’s Beach looking for the perfect spot to park weary 2016 selves. A festive feeling

Having spent the last three weeks in the US it’s hard not to leave without an overwhelming excitement for the upcoming holiday season. This Thursday will be our first Thanksgiving, and while it won’t be your most homely, traditional event (we’re celebrating the day at the hotel buffet), it will certainly provide us with a small snapshot into the American celebration. Our housekeeper has also promised to bring us a bounty of leftover goodies from her family do on Friday which has both of us very excited (and drooling). Christmas is my favourite day every year, as it’s the one time (other than say, a wedding!) where everyone comes together to just be and celebrate their love for one another. To put it simply, I’m jealous that those state side get an extra day of glorious gratitude giving and family loving. We return from our honeymoon on the 29th, right on the cusp of the silly season. As it does every year, December is already looking particularly busy, with every weekend playing host to a gathering or coming together of family …

A wedding, a honeymoon, and an apology

Hello, hello! I feel like I owe you an apology. From the moment I dropped the news last September (2015) that Aaron and I were getting hitched to now, this blog has been a low priority. With so much to do for the big day, rare leisure time has been spent enjoying life outside and offline. That big day was last Friday, the 4th of November, and it was just perfect. We were so blessed not only by beautiful weather and an incredible venue, but with the love and generosity of our family and friends. It was nothing short of magical having everyone we hold dear in the one place. Of course, the best part was by far the fact that I got to marry my best friend and soul mate!! I’m now officially a wife, and not just any wife – but my darling Aaron’s wife. Hoorah for that! It sounds so cliche but I’m the happiest girl in the world. Pointless stress & Excel-themed dreams

The other week I found myself challenged. You see, I’m one of those people who is easily lead by their emotions. Yep, be it a sad, scary or stressful experience, I’m not shy of getting worked up should the moment dictate it. Fortunately as I’ve aged I’ve mastered the rawness that can come from a challenging or upsetting situation – just don’t put on The Notebook, alright?! This said, stress isn’t something I can always easily shake. I often worry about doing the wrong thing, about managing situations correctly and generating the best results, to putting the right foods in my body and keeping others happy (the list goes on) – even though I know all it usually takes to be successful is a vote of self-confidence. On occasion this stress is detrimental to my wellbeing. When things are really busy I frequently have ‘excel’ themed dreams, which are as much of a sleep-disturbing nightmare as they sound. Likewise, if I watch a horror movie or documentary that encourages me to contemplate a serious topic …

The art of saying thank you

Showing gratitude is something that we should all do more often. But sadly (and I’m sure not the only one who feels like this), amongst the hussle and bussle of getting sh*t done, the act of showing thanks can easily fall to the wayside. From work to relationship management and family and friends, to your own health and wellbeing and that of those you care about – everyday we are presented with new gratitude challenges. But it is here, when life takes over and time fades quickly, that we forget about the valued support of those who care about us most. Recently Aaron and I got engaged and with the ring came a flood of love and well wishes from our nearest and dearest. We are exceptionally blessed to be surrounded by a strong network of family and friends, all who care deeply about our long-term happiness and wellbeing. If only our bodies could talk; the signs you’re probably missing

Good health is incredibly elusive. Every day we hear of different tricks, tips and rules that we should be following to lose weight, improve focus, reduce inflammation, repair our guts, increase fertility etc. (the list goes on!). Yet, despite trying to look after ourselves many of us still commonly fall sick, feel lethargic, experience pain, or know that something just isn’t quite right.
