How to food plan like a rock star

Before I started my health kick I used to open the fridge door at work at look at the shelves of homemade lunches with envy. There they stood, packed lovingly the night before full of healthy looking goodness. I wanted to be like those who made at work food look so easy. The owners of this food also didn’t have to spend 20 minutes of precious lunchtime hunting for something reasonably healthy to eat. And then pay $15 for the privilege of enjoying said meal. Fortunately, like all those who had come before me, after some investigation I realised that I too could do the food from home thing. All it would take is a little planning, some consideration and confidence and of course, lots of experimentation! You see, bringing healthy, delicious food from home isn’t actually that hard (I know – shock horror!) you just have to prioritise it and apply some savvy organisation tips to the process. Raw Summer Veggie Pad Thai

Fresh off the back of our amazing trip to Thailand and Cambodia, this week I was craving more of the authentic Asian food we experienced while overseas. Not one to sugar coat it, the food in South East Asia wasn’t always ‘wellness’ kosher, but it certainly was full of flavour and depth. Cambodia is home to some of the most fragrant curries I’ve ever tasted; if you ever get the chance to try an Amok or Khmer dish, don’t pass on it. In Thailand, particularity Phuket where we were based, the seafood options seemed endless. But unfortunately despite how romantic the above sounds, in most instances we were either stuck with poor interpretations of western food or delicious authentic dishes lined with sugar, soy and gluten. Knowing what to snack on when you’re trying to be healthy is like avoiding a Krispy Kreme on an empty stomach – damn hard. While we’d all love to devour that raspberry and white chocolate muffin from the cafe across the road, the only goodness its going to give you is a sugar high for about 15 minutes. That said, try telling a hangry person that the muffin they’re eying off won’t solve all their problems. Avoiding snacking is setting yourself up for failure. Getting healthy on the shimmery, shiny Gold Coast

Love it or hate it, I think almost every Aussie has visited the Gold Coast’s beautiful beaches and tourism hub, Surfers Paradise, at least once. Well known for its white sand, warm weather and friendly people, the area is a playground for tourists, schoolies, holiday makers, young families and now it appears, health and wellness enthusiasts. For me, the Golide has never really been my destination of choice (stay with me GC readers). I’ve always been more a fan of it’s neighbours Byron, Yamba and Noosa; most probably because I find the high-rise buildings, strip clubs and theme parks that crowd Surfers Paradise a little overwhelming. But despite this, this past Easter long weekend my man and I found our ourselves back near the strip seeking some sun, good food and a bit of R&R. And I’m super glad we did. I’m not afraid to admit that the cookie jar in my work kitchen haunts me. It sits so innocently next to the herbal tea, often filled to the brim with all types of delicious goodness. When I think about sweet treats they become almost irresistible, and yes, I do give in on occasion. Unfortunately when I do, I often pay for it a day later with horrible stomach pains. Steer clear of the cookie jar with these wickedly good brownies

Even though I’ve been avoiding sugar for months, I still often feel like something sweet (particularly with a cup of tea or at the end of a long day). Strangely the same goes for coffee despite that I no longer get the lows that come from caffeine withdrawal.  I miss the ritual. If you’re craving sugar or caffeine at certain points in the day, such as the 3pm slump, chances are you’re not fuelling your body properly early in the morning. A breakfast with a sufficient amount of protein is imperative to getting a good start and to avoiding those sweet snacks later in the day. No matter how skilled you are at dodging sugar, sometimes it’s nice to treat yourself (healthily I may add). In the past, the sweetness of kiwi fruits and hummus have settled my need, but recently these favourites just aren’t cutting it. Why? We need to mix up what we eat.
