A wedding, a honeymoon, and an apology

Hello, hello! I feel like I owe you an apology. From the moment I dropped the news last September (2015) that Aaron and I were getting hitched to now, this blog has been a low priority. With so much to do for the big day, rare leisure time has been spent enjoying life outside and offline. That big day was last Friday, the 4th of November, and it was just perfect. We were so blessed not only by beautiful weather and an incredible venue, but with the love and generosity of our family and friends. It was nothing short of magical having everyone we hold dear in the one place. Of course, the best part was by far the fact that I got to marry my best friend and soul mate!! I’m now officially a wife, and not just any wife – but my darling Aaron’s wife. Hoorah for that! It sounds so cliche but I’m the happiest girl in the world. How to food plan like a rock star

Before I started my health kick I used to open the fridge door at work at look at the shelves of homemade lunches with envy. There they stood, packed lovingly the night before full of healthy looking goodness. I wanted to be like those who made at work food look so easy. The owners of this food also didn’t have to spend 20 minutes of precious lunchtime hunting for something reasonably healthy to eat. And then pay $15 for the privilege of enjoying said meal. Fortunately, like all those who had come before me, after some investigation I realised that I too could do the food from home thing. All it would take is a little planning, some consideration and confidence and of course, lots of experimentation! Quinoa Crust Pumpkin Pie + learning to cook

On Sunday I made pie and it was delicious. That sounds kind of old school doesn’t… but I loved every minute of it. Of course, true to my ‘The Whole Life’ approach this wasn’t your ordinary pie. There was no sugar coating or stewed apples. This one was made from quinoa and cinnamon pumpkin. The incredibly simple and delicious feast was from Donna Hay’s Cookbook Fresh and Easy. While her books don’t usually scream sugar free, gluten free or dairy free recipes, this one offers a seriously good bevy of mostly clean options that’s are pretty easy to adapt to your specific food preferences. Winter warmers: the humble berry nut crumble

Winter is in full force. So much so, even the thought of leaving the house without a big scarf and warm boots is enough to send shivers down my spine. Fortunately, with the frost also comes the excuse to eat hot, scrumptious desserts whenever a little warmth is needed (ahem, all the time). Our freezer is currently stocked full of organic frozen berries and as a result the humble berry nut crumble is quickly becoming a winter staple. The recipe for this warmer is incredibly simple. The below deconstructed version also keeps all week (crumble in an air-tight container, berries in the freezer) so if you can resist eating it all at once, it’s a handy one to have ready for lunchboxes. Other than being delicious, berries are also antioxidant powerhouses. Their superpowers include the ability to improve mental dexterity and heart health all while reducing the risk of cancer. Gettin’ snacky with it + the best ever raw granola slice

Knowing what to snack on when you’re trying to be healthy is like avoiding a Krispy Kreme on an empty stomach – damn hard. While we’d all love to devour that raspberry and white chocolate muffin from the cafe across the road, the only goodness its going to give you is a sugar high for about 15 minutes. That said, try telling a hangry person that the muffin they’re eying off won’t solve all their problems. Avoiding snacking is setting yourself up for failure. Having a list of go to snacks that are easy are to prepare, reasonably inexpensive, handbag suitable, while also being super good for you is the healthy eating holy grail. It’s also the only way you’ll beat that inner monster who’s demanding you to eat all the chips, now. Lee Holmes’ book launch ‘Eat Clean, Green & Vegetarian’ + her heavenly Caramelised Onion Tart

With the wellness revolution booming there seems to be a new cookbook ready for testing every other week. I was fortunate enough to spend last Tuesday night with my good friend Mel (from The Well-Planned Wife) at the book launch of Lee Holmes’ fifth book ‘Eat Clean, Green and Vegetarian’. I’ve found that health and wellness cookbooks can be placed into two categories; those that produce deliciously good food, and those that produce food that simply tastes healthy. Why the distinction? While healthy is important, healthy shouldn’t equal bland just because it lacks sugar, dairy or gluten. Lee’s books use nutrient rich ingredients and wholefoods to create delicious recipes designed to help our bodies perform at their best everyday; with a particular emphasis on the healing properties of clean, unprocessed foods on our guts. Having had the pleasure of first meeting Lee at last year’s Vitality conference, and then again through work this year, I can say she is a truly lovely person. Clean Blueberry, Coconut and Cacao Cookies

I’m not afraid to admit that the cookie jar in my work kitchen haunts me. It sits so innocently next to the herbal tea, often filled to the brim with all types of delicious goodness. When I think about sweet treats they become almost irresistible, and yes, I do give in on occasion. Unfortunately when I do, I often pay for it a day later with horrible stomach pains. No matter how delightful at the time, the Butterscotch Fingers are never worth it (not even the chocolate covered ones). 😉 I’ve blogged previously about the benefits of having your own healthier treats ready-to-go and today I’m here to share another one of my favourite recipes for such an occasion. I’ve spoken to several people over the course of my journey, and many advocate removing all sweets (and subsequently a lot of the joy) from your diet.
